2009 Beer Competition
Three Breweries Win Double Medals
at Spring Beer & Wine Fest Brewery Competition
PORTLAND, ORE. – In a
field of nearly 90 beers, three breweries garnered double medals over the
weekend in the annual Spring Beer & Wine Fest beer competition, and another
13 breweries also medaled in the event.
Bend-based Deschutes Brewing, Hawaii’s Kona
Brewing and Everett-Wash.-based Lazy Boy Brewing each won two medals in the
competition. Kona grabbed two golds – one for Longboard Lager in the Lager
category and one for Wailua Wheat in the Wheat category. Deschutes’ Miss
Spelt, a German spelt ale, won silver in the broad Other category and its
Hop Henge won silver in the IPA/Double IPA category. Lazy Boy won silver in
the Belgian category with its Belgian Golden and garnered a second silver
medal in the Red/Amber category with its Double Red.
Astoria Brewing Company won a “threepeat” at the Spring Beer & Wine Fest
last weekend with its popular “Bitter Bitch Double IPA” taking the People’s
Choice Award for the third year in a row. Unlike the judged beer event that
is connected to the fest, the People’s Choice award is purely voted on by
attendees at the festival.
